Valid inferences from invalid tests?

چکیده
I read with interest the remarks of Reuben J. Silver, which were published in the November 2001 issue of the American Psychologist on the occasion of his receiving the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Applied Psychology as a Professional Practice. Silver took the opportunity to delineate his approach to the practice of professional psychology. He described a perspective that combines an appreciation for actuarial prediction and empirical data with a sensitivity to the many instances when a practitioner must act without the benefit of empirical support. In this regard, Silver imparted a wonderful example of the integration of science and practice. However, I must disagree with one aspect of what Silver conveyed regarding the use of psychological tests. Silver (2001) emphasized the importance of accurate diagnosis and the use of empirically validated psychological tests to help achieve accurate diagnosis. He then stated,

Processing of logically valid and logically invalid conditional inferences in discourse comprehension.
Two competing theories of processing of conditionals (if-then) were tested. Syntactic theories posit that people only draw inferences conforming to the logically valid modus ponens (MP) schema. Mental models theories predict that people draw MP and invalid affirming-the-consequent (AC) inferences. Three experiments tested these predictions. Participants read short stories that conformed to eith...
متن کاملEquivalence of Syllogisms
We consider two categorical syllogisms, valid or invalid, to be equivalent if they can be transformed into each other by certain transformations, going back to Aristotle, that preserve validity. It is shown that two syllogisms are equivalent if and only if they have the same models. Counts are obtained for the number of syllogisms in each equivalence class. To make the development more natural,...
متن کاملIssues in Reasoning about Iffy propositions: Deductive Rationality in Validating and Testing Conditional Inferences
We asked people to validate conditional inferences. The results show, first, that people are more likely to look for a falsification versus confirmation. Second, falsification rates are lower for logically valid versus invalid inferences. Deductively valid inferences are inferences that follow necessarily. Our Experiment (N = 96) shows that emphasising this logicality constraint increases falsi...
متن کاملCentering and the meaning of conditionals
The centering inference p & q, therefore if p then q is important in reasoning research because it is logically valid for some accounts of conditionals (e. g. the material and the probability conditionals), but not for others (e. g. the inferential conditional, according to which a conditional is true if and only if there is an inferential connection between p and q). We tested participants' ac...
متن کاملDo laboratory results concerning high-viscosity glass-ionomers versus amalgam for tooth restorations indicate similar effect direction and magnitude than that of clinical controlled trials? - A meta-epidemiological study [protocol]
A large percentage of evidence concerning dental interventions is based on laboratory research. The aim of this metaepidemiological study is to establish whether valid clinical inferences and recommendations can be made on basis of the current laboratory evidence concerning high-viscosity glass-ionomer cement (HVGICs) versus amalgam as materials for placing restorations in permanent posterior t...
متن کاملThe elusive odness of or-introduction
The inference of or-introduction, p, therefore p or q, is fundamental in classical logic and probability theory. Yet traditional research in the psychology of reasoning found that people did not endorse this inference as highly as other onepremise valid inferences. A radical response to this finding is to claim that or-introduction is in fact invalid. This response is found in the recent revisi...
